Students applying for full-time positions on the programme must have an excellent academic record and should normally possess a Master's Degree. Part-time students are expected to be mid-career professionals with strong educational and professional backgrounds and normally in possession of a Master's degree. Applicants for part time positions must submit proposals that demonstrate a clear linkage between their current work and their PhD topic.

Each year a Call for Applications is published on the SEERC website and applicants are invited to submit their research proposals either to specific topics or under a broad thematic area, as advertised in the Call. Following the Call and after having chosen their preferred topic of study, candidates should proceed with preparing their application.

Evaluation and results

Following a first screening of the proposals, a short-list of applicants is prepared and short-listed candidates are invited to an interview with an academic panel. All interview invitees are informed on the outcome of their application whether positive or negative. Successful candidates are informed of acceptance to the doctoral programme both from SEERC and the University of Sheffield so that they can begin the registration process with their respective department at the University of Sheffield.
