Drawing on research undertaken by the Intermediality Research Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research (convenors Chapple and Kattenbelt), the constituent elements of Intermediality in theatre and performance will be mapped out and explored through reference to Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s piece of musical theatre Sunday in the Park, with George (1984) for which the Georges Seurat painting Un Dimanche à La Grande Jatte (1884-6) served as their creative genesis. In particular, I will be exploring the Menier Chocolate Factory production of Sunday in the Park, with George (2006) where extensive use was made of digitally created images of the Seurat painting and other digital media effects.
