BCI 2009 is the 4th biannual Balkan Conference in Informatics, following BCI 2007 held in Sofia, BCI 2005 held in Ohrid, and BCI 2003 held in Thessaloniki. The aim of the BCI conference series is to provide a forum for discussions and dissemination of research achievements, to promote interaction and collaboration among scientists from the Balkans and beyond, and to encourage involvement of young researchers from the region.

BCI 2009 took place on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of September 2009, in Thessaloniki, Greece. It attracted researchers from 14 different countries, with the vast majority coming from countries within the greater Balkan region, such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Greece.

The programme included more than 70 presentations of research papers, 3 invited talks by Michail Bletsas (MIT Media Lab, USA), Keith Jeffery (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK), and Dimitris Karagiannis (University of Vienna, Austria), and a training and networking workshop for Western Balkan and EU Research Cooperation on ICT.
