The South East European Research Centre invites applications for studying towards a PhD degree of the University of Sheffield, through the Doctoral Programme of SEERC. The deadline for applying is June 14, 2013.

The International Faculty of the University of Sheffield-CITY College, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo are offering 5 scholarships for Full time and Part time PhD studies at SEERC. The deadline for the submission of the application packs is Monday June 17, 2013.

Building on the success of the seven previous Doctoral conferences which totally attracted more than 700 research papers from countries all over the SE European region and beyond, we are pleased to be launching the Call for Papers for the 8th Annual South East European Doctoral Student Conference (8th DSC). DSC 2013 will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, on the 16th and 17th of September, 2013.

In the frame of the Research Students' Seminar Series at SEERC, we are pleased to announce a seminar to be delivered by Mr Fivos Papamalis, PhD Candidate at SEERC on the topic: “Treatment response specificity: Exploring determinants of engagement in therapeutic process”. The seminar is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 19 February 2013, 11:00-12:00 at A3 room (2nd floor, Strategakis building).

Over 50 years old students meet teenager teachers at CITY College to learn basic computer skills, in the frame of the 'Knowledge Volunteers' project undertaken by the CITY in collaboration with the organisation '50+ Hellas'. The programme started in the beginning October 2012 and is scheduled to finish at the end of November.

In the frame of the Open Seminar Series at SEERC, we are pleased to announce a seminar to be delivered by Dr Dawn Teare, Senior Lecturer in Genetic Epidemiology, at ScHARR, at The University of Sheffield, on the topic: “How large should a pilot trial be?”. The seminar is scheduled to take place on Monday 18 February 2013 12:00-13:00 at SEERC Conference room (3rd floor, Strategakis building).

In the frame of the Open Seminar Series at SEERC, we are pleased to announce a seminar to be delivered by Dr Dan Carroll, from the Psychology Department of The University of Sheffield, on the topic:“Cognitive Flexibility Across the Life-span”. The seminar is scheduled to take place on Monday 21 January 2013 at 12:30.

The MORMED project has been concluded, following a successful review of the project's achievements during its last year of execution.

The South East European Research Centre (SEERC) successfully organised the 1st South East Europe Science Festival - Innovation Through Science: Learn, Experience, Innovate, Celebrate!, the first Science Festival which took place in Thessaloniki at NOESIS Science Centre on 18 October 2012.

The Greek Computer Society (ΕΠΥ), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia, the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, the South-East European Research Centre and the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, organize the 17th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics (PCI 2013) in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 19th - 21st of September 2013.

The main objective of the BCI series of conferences is to provide a forum for discussions and dissemination of research accomplishments and to promote interaction and collaboration among scientists from the Balkan countries and the rest of the world, and to encourage involvement of young researchers from the region.

High bureaucracy, the limited size of home (country) markets for innovative products and thus the need to access the world market, the need for efficiently manage the innovation processes, even more networking and long-term view and investment, entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to take risks as well as other cultural and human aspects are some of the main issues affecting the development and sustainability of knowledge exchange between universities and companies according to the conclusions of the INNOPOLIS Final Conference.

The 7th Annual South East European Doctoral Student Conference (DSC2012), organized by the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) was successfully held on the 24th and 25th of September 2012 at CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The English in Europe project aims to examine the role of English in different contexts of today’s Europe by hosting five conferences in different parts of Europe (Sheffield, Zaragoza, Copenhagen, Thessaloniki and Prague). SEERC is proud to be the lead organizer of the third conference in Thessaloniki on 22-24 November, 2013.

The South East European Research Centre announces the 1st South East Europe Science Festival - Innovation Through Science: Learn, Experience, Innovate, Celebrate !, the first Science Festival taking place in Thessaloniki at NOESIS on 18 October 2012. The entrance is free of charge!

A two-day conference featuring representatives from the European Commission (Directorate General for Research and Innovation), the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts ( NESTA, UK) and the New Economy Development Fund (GR) will illustrate how knowledge exchange practices in University City Regions can benefit regional development.

The British Council, SEERC, and The Research Centre for English Language Teaching, Testing and Assesment of The University of Athens (RCEL), in the frame of the European Project Language Rich Europe, organise an event where they will be presenting research results on language policies and practices among 24 Countries.

The lack of trust between industry and academia, the low BERD (Business Expenditure on Research and Development), the high percentage of micro-businesses and the low-tech structure of regional entrepreneurship, the inadequate performance of Technology Transfer Offices, the fact that nationwide policies cannot be easily adapted to regional characteristics and the limited motivation of academic research - which is mainly funding oriented – were cited as the main blockers for the application of the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programme in the region of Central Macedonia, Greece.

SEERC organised a workshop on “Innovation in the Western Balkan countries: Capacity, Status Quo and Best Practice” within the 5th International Conference on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development (ICEIRD 2012) that took place in Sofia on 01-02 June 2012.

In the frame of the Research Students' Seminar Series at SEERC, we are pleased to announce a seminar to be delivered by Ms Darja Koturovic, PhD candidate, on the topic:"Governmental and non-governmental action against organized crime and drug trafficking in Serbia". The seminar is scheduled to take place in the SEERC Conference Room (3rd floor Strategakis Bld.), on Monday 21 May, 2012 at 10:00.

The work of researchers in SEERC's Information & Knowledge Management group came under the spotlight of an industrial case study report by WSO2 - a global leader in the area of enterprise middleware software. The report examines how SEERC created a software system to support governance and quality control in the next-generation cloud computing platform developed in research project CAST.
