Interest in the so-called "second generation" is a relatively recent trend in the academic literature on migration and integration. In Europe, research on the second generation has followed societal and political concerns about the failure of European societies to integrate ethnic minorities, as well as a pure academic interest. It is a common view that the integration of the second generation is an important indicator both of the degree of integration of immigrants into a specific society and of the more general legacy of contemporary immigration. This presentation will focus on the Albanian "second generation" and issues of identity, transnational ties and pathways of integration. As a "research in progress" seminar, there will be discussions on qualitative methods and more practical aspects of working in different national and cultural contexts, with different age groups and across languages.
