The gender dimension in R&I organisations: exploring career progression, the leadership ‘gap’ and sexual harassment

Within the context of TeRRItoria the Region of Central Macedonia and the South-East European Centre (SEERC) are organizing a public (online) event on Tuesday 22 June 11:00 a.m., on the topic of «The gender dimension in R&I organisations: exploring career progression, the leadership ‘gap’ and sexual harassment». The event will be held in Greek.

The European Commission has recognized Gender Equality as an important priority and is systematically promoting the application of Gender Equality Plans as a core strategy for the realization of EU policies. The commitment to achieve an equitable and secure environment is also reflected in recent and published strategies. These aim to enhance the support towards Gender Equality within the field and the organizations of the Research and Innovation (R&I).

Within the context of “TeRRItoria - Territorial responsible research and innovation through the involvement of local R&I actors”, six online events have been organized with participants from the academic sector, the industry, the political/government field and the general public. The primary goal of these initiatives was to co-create a Gender Equality Plan for the R&I field of the Region, introducing and enhancing the appropriate transformational changes that answer to the true needs of the R&I institutions of the region in terms of gender equality. In a broader context, the goal of the «TeRRItoria» project is to promote the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation - RRI in five different regions/territories in Europe.

In continuation to the previous events, the aim of the present event is to host a panel discussion, which delves deeper into gender issues affecting the dynamics of all contemporary R&I organizations. Three core challenges that hinder organizational gender equality and equity have been selected to be thoroughly discussed: female career progression, leadership gap, and sexual harassment. Such phenomena remain as important challenges both for the EU and the country of Greece, and point towards the support of individuals of all genders within R&I organizations. Guest speakers, who are experts in the respective topics, will lead the panel and deliver their presentations.

Eri Pavlaki

Co-founder and CEO of Women Do Business

Eri Pavlaki holds a MSc degree in International Law, Diplomacy Studies & Human Rights. She is professionally experienced in various fields, while she had also taken over the management of a family business active in the sector of imports & trade. She occupied herself with Marketing and B2B sales of various companies in Crete. She was the founder and chairwoman of the voluntary association "I'm Still a Child" for abused and needy children. She was identified as a trainee and mentor in Erasmus+ activities. Eri Pavlaki has supported several respective social projects as a Leader or Project Manager during her social activism. Through her actions in Civil Society, she has directly or indirectly benefited almost 11,000 people.

Natasa Grigoraki

Co-founder of Women Do Business & Co-owner and CEO of mobile phone store

Natasa Grigoraki studied at the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science at the Democritus University of Thrace with a major in swimming. She was a Physical Education Teacher, aerobics instructor and promoter of the value of exercise in a weekly TV show. She held administrative positions in health & beauty centers. From 2007 until today, she is a co-owner and CEO of the mobile phone store GERMANOS. She is an active businesswoman, wife and mother of three. For several years, she represents the Parents and Guardians Associations in Secondary Education. Natasa Grigoraki has a deep and strong affection for society and children.

Nancy Papalexandris

Papalexandris Nancy is Professor Emeritus of Human Resource Management and Academic Advisor of the MSc Programme in Human Resource Management of the Athens University of Economics and Business.  For the period 2001-2007 she has served as Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Personnel of her University and as representative of the Greek Rectors Conference at the European University Association for the period 2004-2007.

She has studied Business Administration and obtained her M.A. from New York University and her Ph.D. from the University of Bath in the U.K. She teaches Human Resources Management, Organisational Behaviour, Diversity and Inclusion, Business Communications and Intercultural Management. She has also taught in various E.U. Universities and in post-training and management development seminars in Greece and abroad.  

Her research interests include human resource management, women in management, organisational behaviour, cross cultural management, small-medium enterprises, issues in public administration, public relations and communications. She has published articles in various international journals and has organised a number of international conferences. She has served as President of the Association of Greek University Women (Eλληνικ΄η Εταιρία Γυναικών Πανεπιστημιακών (ΕΛΕΓΥΠ) (2012-20) where she is at present the Secretary General.

Stella Kasdagli

Stella Kasdagli is the co-founder of Women On Top, a non-profit organisation in Greece for the professional development of women and for gender equality in the public sphere. Within just 8 years, Women on Top has managed to become the most experienced organization in Greece regarding women’s professional empowerment and, in 2020, it became the first non-profit organization participating in the National Council for Gender Equality, while also taking part in key policy consultations with major stakeholders from state institutions and industry leaders.
With a small team of just 3 people, WoT has managed to build and sustain a team of 450 volunteer mentors who completed 830 mentorship programs. It has provided training and learning opportunities to more than 1,200 women, to advance their skills and build confidence to pursue professional opportunities. It has also established strong and lasting relationships with more than 45 organizations, institutions, associations and companies and it remains rooted and relevant through ongoing research and development. Stella is also a published author, a translator, a book club maverick and the facilitator of impactful workshops on professional development, gender issues and social change. She previously studied French Literature in Athens, Greece, and Media Studies in London, and has worked for 10+ years as a women’s magazine and online editor. She is the recipient of the Social Impact UK Alumni Award and She has published eight books for the empowerment of girls, women and teens. She lives in Athens with her husband and two daughters.
