Applications are invited for one Research Associate position in the EU-funded research project CAST (http://www.cast-project.eu). The aim of the project is the realisation of an advanced cloud computing platform supporting the development and deployment of enterprise software applications. The project is seeking to advance the state of the art with regard to Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings.

The principal task of the postholder will be to work on the development of a Java-based registry and repository system that supports the management of the platform, assist with technical writing and documentation for the project, and undertake additional research and development activities as needed. A solid theoretical background in computer science and experience in software development with Java and related technologies (Java EE, application servers, OSGi, Eclipse IDE) are essential. Experience with EU-funded research projects would be evaluated positively. Applicants should hold a good first degree and postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will be working within the Information and Knowledge Management research cluster at SEERC (http://www.seerc.org/ikm) and will be based in Thessaloniki, Greece, on a full-time basis. Fluency in English is a prerequisite, and knowledge of Greek would be an advantage. The postholder is expected to be highly motivated and proactive, have excellent organisation and communication skills, and be eager to disseminate research results by preparing articles and papers, and presenting at international conferences and seminars.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work on the design, development and testing of the registry and repository system for the CAST platform, in collaboration with other members of the group and technical partners.
  • Undertake reporting and technical documentation requirements, in collaboration with other members of the Information and Knowledge Management research cluster.
  • Present results to collaborators in the project, members of the research cluster and external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
  • Assist in writing supporting documents to contribute to and support the work of the cluster.
  • Assist in preparing and submitting research project proposals to secure funding from European or Greek research funding programmes.
  • Carry out administrative duties as requested, e.g. arranging project progress meetings.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments.

Further Information:

The contract for this post is officially ending in July 2011. However, subject to the postholder’s performance, the contract could be extended to work in a related project that lasts till March 2015. The salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. Moreover, SEERC may be able to provide a scholarship for undertaking research leading to the award of a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield.
